Nelson felt it was important to lead the fight for equality for all transgender and non-binary people facing discrimination, according to a statement provided during the testimony portion of the court.
“I’m here today to present this because it’s important to me, as a trans person, that my existence be respected. I am a human being with a beating heart and a desire to be seen, valued and heard in the world, ”said Nelson. “And I’m also here for all the other current and future trans or queer people working in a customer-centric service or environment so that hopefully this doesn’t happen again. Because it is a lot. It is very draining. And we deserve to live, to have joy and to be respected for who we are.
The court also ordered the restaurant to implement a pronoun policy.
